Happy birthday to Uncle Tim and Kach!
Our day of work and chores will have a good pay-off tomorrow...in a surprise move for the kids, we'll drive northeast and visit the Assateague National Seashore and its cousin, Chincoteague Island, home to the Chincoteague ponies made famous by "Misty of Chincoteague." Kelsey and Kendall struggle with increased heartrate and fast breathing whenever the ponies are mentioned, and they think that we permanently bypassed a visit to the island when we headed south earlier this week. It'll be a long day in the truck, but I don't think they'll be aware of the return trip. :-)
Our drive tomorrow will take us across (and through) one of the engineering marvels of the modern world: The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It connects southeastern Virginia with the Delmarva (Maryland/Delaware/Virginia) Peninsula to the north. Opened to traffic in 1964, the 17.6-mile span is considered the largest bridge-tunnel complex in the world. We'll pay for the privilege of traveling it...around $20 roundtrip. But it'll be worth every penny to see the girls' faces light up when seeing the ponies.
A few other changes in our itinerary have occurred, as well, and we now anticipate a return to the Springs in early December, rather than the middle of that month. We haven't shared much about the bouts of homesickness that hit us every few days. It's very real, especially now that the official school year has begun. We're still very excited to push on through these next few weeks, but knowing that home is a week or two closer makes a big difference to our hearts!
