The rain held off for most of the day, allowing us to enjoy the Schoodic Peninsula of Acadia, which lies north of the park's main island. It's the land that was given by the British family...referenced a couple of days ago. It's a very dramatic coastline; all of the tremendous granite outcrops, but without the cliffs. We could scramble all the way down to the water line, where we sat for a few minutes and marvelled at the power of the ocean. The tide was in its final surge, and the spray as it bashed against the rocks was impressive--to put it mildly.
The cooler temps today (it was 62 degrees at noon) had us craving a bowl of steamy chowder, and so we decided to save our picnic fixins for tomorrow and grabbed lunch at a charming cafe on the peninsula. Stan and I split a bowl of lobster stew and a lobster roll--a sinful delight of lobster chunks in mayonaisse, served in a garlicky sourdough roll. It's a really good thing we're leaving the area tomorrow, and that we hadn't tried the lobster roll until today...we'd have eaten nothing else.
It's now raining gently...a wonderful sound on the camper's roof that makes us sleepy and relaxed. We'll pull things together in the morning and head south to New Hampshire, but we don't want to leave this special place. Once we're home in December, we plan to investigate a teacher/ranger program offered by Acadia; the park hires a few teachers as rangers for the summer season, using them for park interpretation. How amazing it would be to earn a paycheck for enjoying the carriage roads, hiking trails, mountains and ocean! (Not to mention the proximity to lobster rolls!) The L.L.Bean outlet is another local danger...good thing we're leaving.

Lobster-trap buoys displayed beneath the stairs leading to our lobster-roll lunch spot today. Fishermen identify their buoys by the colors...every harbor has a rainbow of patterns and shades in the hundreds of bouys spread out across the water. |
