Day 1

The adventure begins! After an early start this morning, we hit our groove, getting used to the truck and all of the creaks and other noises as it pulled "Teensie" toward Kansas. Our first stop, a rest area across the state line, brought a great surprise...we bumped into Stan's former teaching partner, Karen Baertlein, in the visitor information center!! What a small world.

Our next stop was at Nicodemus, the first town established by newly freed slaves (most of them from Lexington, Ky.--where Susan's mom was raised) following the Civil War. A national historic site in the park system, it was eye-opening and engaging. An unknown piece of history for us. And the girls had fun earning their first Junior Ranger badge of the trip.

We passed up our opportunity to see the world's largest ball of twine...sorry, Scott K.! We're now comfortably cool in our rig, thanks to A/C, and the girls are sleeping. Stan will launch school tomorrow, and then we're off to the Kansas Cosmosphere. Go to www.cosmosphere.org and check it out.
Having trouble with connection and can't attach photos. We'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for the prayers. 'night, all.

  1. That is awesome. You have only been gone one day and you already ran into someone you know. Gotta love the "John Stevens" like ability to know someone everywhere you go. :) Love you all. Tim
